A young distillery in Edinburgh, Port of Leith had the idea to bottle the same oloroso sherry that is being used to season casks for their whisky. Made at Bodegas Barón, this sherry has a classic oloroso character with flavours of dried fruits and prunes balanced with lighter tropical fruits. There is an undercurrent warming gingery spice and notes of coffee and hazelnuts throughout.

The concept of buying barrels with original contents in which to mature malt whisky suggested to me an attention to quality worth investigating, and I tried a bottle of tawny port. I was so impressed I immediately ordered three more: one for when the first bottle was finished, one for Christmas and one for keeping. Christmas came and went but the port had all been enjoyed by then, and I'm back for more. I wanted to try the sherry but unfortunately, it's out of stock...
