The sugar plantation on which the Depaz Distillery now stands was established in 1651. In 1902 Mount Pelee volcano erupted destroying the capital of Martinique Saint-Pierre, it levelled the sugar plantation and the L’Habitation Perrinelle distillery that was run by the Depaz family. Only one member of the family survived, Victor Depaz, who was at that time studying in Bordeaux.
