Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Dave Broom for Whisky Advocate

    • Port Ellen's make was usually filled into old casks to maximise its smoke when used young. To us, therefore, it's Islay's most austere malt, yet the guys who worked there all talk of its sweetness. Here, finally, its an example of that. Yes, there's some wet slate and briny smoke, but it's balanced by citrus, waxy fruits, and a central sweet-ness adding complexity. It might have taken a long time to get here, but it was worth the wait. 92 Points.

Tasted this for the first time at Stourbridge Whiskyfest 2012.Part of Colin Dunn's (Diageo) Masterclass. Absolutely knockout. Beautifully complex with delicious sweetness, hints of smoke and peat, and long satifying finish. May never taste another like it, a real once in a lifetime dram.
