A rich and spicy rum from Mount Gay distillery in Barbados, Black Barrel has been finished in in heavily charred ex-bourbon barrels. Bold spices fill the palate, balanced by creamy vanilla, caramel and tropical fruits.

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Note by Stuart P

Nose: Honey and soft spice, followed by notes of black pepper, cinnamon and a touch of resin.

Palate: Toasty oak and sweet spice, with a refreshing hit of black pepper.

Finish: The charred-oak character lingers, along with honeyed, peppery spice.

Beautiful, smooth rum – great mellow taste. My rum of choice.

Having also been to the Mount gay distillery in Barbados I was surprised how whisky-like this rum is. I have to say I like the flavour, colour and aroma of this rum, and lends itself well to drinking neat and at room temperature. I loved it.

I'm sure it's an excellent rum. I had to try it, but I was disappointed. As CG says it reminded him/her of a peaty whiskey, and that's why I didn't particularly like it - it tastes too much like whiskey. Prefer the Eclipse and the Extra Old.

Barbados rum is so totally unlike what gets sold as rum in UK supermarkets. Is genuine Caribbean rum all like this? I now know why friends of Caribbean decent talk so long and lovingly about the rum that they always bring back from trips to see family. Eclipse is so brandy-like, so sweet and clean, just a perfect drink after a meal. Black barrel is just more complex - extra vanilla notes and the hint of the smokiness that reminds me of peaty whiskey - a drink for after, after dinner. Do not be afraid to add a little water - a fantastic drink for slowly sipping.

The price point is the only real downside. It is extremely smooth and subtle, but lacks any strong flavour; It is the best rum I've ever had for mixing. Don't let the bourbon barrel fool you, it is not a rum you drink straight. If it wasn't for the price point, I'd choose this over the original or Eclipse any day.

Quite disappointed. Flavours aren't as exuberant an you'd expect and the bourbon taste is too overwhelming. Much prefer Mount Gay Eclipse.

Warm and well balanced, lots of aromas, not too sweet. A rum for grown-ups!
