Strathisla 1957 / 57 Year Old / G&M Private Collection Ultra
Product Description

A 57-year-old Strathisla released by Gordon & Macphail as part of the Private Collection Ultra series, believed to be the oldest ever bottling from the distillery. Chosen by Michael Urquhart and his daughter Laura, this is dark and rich, both in colour and flavour, with an umami character well-integrated with the oaky notes.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Rocky

    • Nose

Incredibly intense and complex nose, with pickled gherkins joined by hazelnuts, geraniums and a hint of wood.

    • Palate

The complexity continues with an oily texture with soy sauce, umami and Christmas cake combined with dry woody spiciness that is well-integrated.

    • Finish

Long and dry with the wood notes prominent, but not overpowering.

    • Comment

The one that divided the room, with prominent woodiness being too much for some, but for me it was well-integrated, with the oak not overpowering, and an excellent example of drier-style sherried whisky.

  • Tasting Notes by Jonny McCormick

    • Nose

Slight nuttiness, pecan, walnut, and there’s subtle smoke twisting around too. The fruit is solid and fresh: black cherry, damson, cooking apple, and raisin.

    • Palate

Soft and ethereal at first, then a tantalising touch of bitterness, not too much, but complemented by the fruit sweetness swelling around the sides.

    • With water

Cautiously, this finesses the sweetness and fruit, but does not eliminate those weightier, chocolate notes. They are boosted on the palate however, with more coffee, chocolate and black fruits apparent, and the loss of the bitterness.

    • Comment

Strathisla whisky has never been more mature to offer a comparison, so this is utterly unique. Suffice to say, this magnificent, beguiling beauty offers all the dimensions and sophistication you would hope for in a greatly matured malt whisky. It is a rare and unforgettable experience.
