Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • SMWS Tasting Notes

    • This distillery was founded in 1819 by the Duke of Sutherland - the same one who cleared 15,000 souls from his estates to make way for sheep - but its name was changed to that of the neighbouring village when a new distillery was built alongside in 1967/68 and given the original name. It was closed for seven years (until 1975), then operated for seven years, before being closed terminally. This cask has given its contents a curious green-gold colour. The first nose is of powdered milk, with traces of leather and mothballs; somewhat nose-drying in its effect, and very slightly smoky. The latter become lightly medicinal, fresh and minty, like dentists' mouthwash, or rather toothpicks treated with mouthwash. Deliciously sweet and smoky at natural strength, water brings up the medicinal notes, and leaves mouthwash in the aftertaste. Fresh and invigorating.
