Glenallachie

Glenallachie

Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Glenallachie is a relatively modern distillery, having been built in Banffshire in 1967-8 by Mackinlay, McPherson & Co., a subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle. The distillery was built by William Delme Evans, the third distillery he had been involved with after Tullibardine and Isle of Jura (where he was managing director for a time).

Mackinlay, McPherson sold Glenallachie to Invergordon Distillers in 1985. The new owners closed the distillery in 1987, before selling it to Campbell Distillers (a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard) in 1989, since when it has been in continuous production underPernod's Chivas Brothers umbrella.

The vast majority of Glenallachie's malt goes into a variety of Chivas blends (Queen Anne, Passport, 100 pipers etc). Official bottlings have been few and far between: a 12 year-old was available in the 1980s, but the most recent official bottlings have been (atypically) heavily-sherried small batch bottlings sold at the distillery itself. Independent bottlngs are rare, but not unknown.
