Customer Rating

Pulteney is the most northerly mainland distillery in Scotland and known for their love of the sea - some of which rolls over into their whisky. The 21 year old is a mix of fino sherry and refill bourbon cask matured whisky and sits at the top of their regular range.

Old Pulteney 21 Year Old Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Billy A

Nose: Apple, butterscotch, Malted Milk biscuits, bananas and a little bit of lime.

Taste: Again a sweet start, moving on to marzipan and then sour fruit, green apple and cinnamon. There's also vanilla, dry wood and some of the bananas from the nose.

Finish: An interesting one with this, with coconut (shell and flesh), a whiff of menthol and a bit of gooseberry just before it fades.

The best Pulteny I have tasted so far and I have finished 3 bottles 21 years old so far. Of course not comparable to cask strength, but very good: salty, malty, rolling. Warms you up to a good mood on dark autumn days.

Excellent. The complex nose has hemp rope, milk chocolate, lime, orange oil and brine. He palate offers dry wood, ginger, lots of malt and some heat on the finish. A drop of water softens the palate but in my opinion does not add to the overall experience.. The finish goes on and on. Try this before it is gone!

Quite possibly the best whiskey in the world. The subtle hint of cherry along with the salty pulteney trade mark is a mouth party.

Have not tasted all the great scotch whiskies of the world but Old Pulteney 21 year old whisky is the best I have tasted. Love the finish - always want a bit more!

Very much the scene tasting notes has the 12 year salt lemon lime in a smoky sensation at the end. Well worth the extended price tag

This was one of Jim Murray's whiskies of the Year. He especially exclaimed its crispness, which is a Pulteney hallmark. In this whisky it reaches its zentih. Form the nose to the palate and even the finish, it reamains fresh and crisp, and the sherry wafting on this excellent spirit is just the right weight. I see the first reviewer here complained it's sharp. Just spend enough time with this one. Become friends, and the rewards won't stop. After my first bottle I bought three more just to make sure I always have some on my home shelf.

One of the best whiskies ever. Lots of caramel and fruit on the nose, sweet almonds and spice on the palate, some eucalyptus (menthol) and loads of vanilla all around. I simply cannot get enough.

What an awesome whisky. The nose promises heaven, and the palate delivers. Then the heavenly finish draws you back in. Absolutely awesome!!

Interesting dram, nice nose. Hint of brine and honey on the tongue. But the really sharp finish ruins it. Nice to drink but not really exciting. Recommend for those just starting on their malk journey.

this stands out head and shoulder above the rest sp when you look @ the price...whiskies costing 10 times more than this bottle does not hold a candle to this even...great spirit @ this price...simply stunning,

I'm not sure about this one. The nose is superb with green apples, delicate honey and a bit seaweed. At first the delivery is very complex with fuits, honey and some banana among other things. Then hits very, very sharp barley and takes over the whole show. The whisky is struggling to maintain the balance and in the finish it falls apart. A disappointment, I don't if my bottle was faulty or something.

After waiting a long time fighting off the Whisky Bible influence, I finally gave in and bit the bullet. However, it just did not make my brow rise in interest. Emotional response, vibe of it - if you will, is just too flat for me. Not going for a Whisky Bible bottle again without having a taste first.

The only problem with this Whisky is that it is limited to one bottle per customer. A truly outstanding dram Tony Jones.

Beautiful craftsmanship. This is a special whisky. It hits on all cylinders: wonderful bouquet on the nose, sensual mouth feel, and a spectacular finish. I tasted some great single malts in the last 12 months and this one is definitely in the top five.

Ordered Old Pulteney 21 Year Old and shared this bottle with family on Christmas Day. What a great whiskey! The whole bottle was consumed with ease!

This is a christmas present for my husband, who is yet to taste it. Just a note to say how impressed I am with the service. I ordered it in the afternoon and it was with me by courier the next day, and I paid for standard delivery. Thank you for such excellent service

A subtle, complex and refined whisky. It opens up with time and patience to produce some very pleasant surprises. Now do I open up that 30 yr old to compare ?!!

  • Thurso 24 October 2011

Although a great malt it comes second to Highland Park 18yr old. Which as all whisky buffs will know is the REAL most northerly distillery in Scotland.

I'm just sitting here next to yet another empty bottle of Old Pulteney, this time the 21 yo and what can I say? I love the whole range, my favourite being the 17 yo (although I'm yet to try the 30 yo) and this 21 delivers a great balance between sherry and oak, delicious on the nose but dry on the palate. You will never open my cabinet and not find at least one OP in there.
