A beautifully complex whisky from closed distillery Willowbank in Dunedin, New Zealand – the world's southernmost distillery until its destruction in the late 1990s.
After an unconventional double maturation – a quartet of ex-bourbon barrels followed by a lengthy period in French oak New Zealand wine casks – this is a complex 18-year-old full of full-bodied, lingering dark fruit notes and woody spice. Exclusive to The Whisky Exchange.Tasting Notes (1)

Thick brown sugar, butter and fruity caramel – lardy cake with extra sugar. Pineapple cubes, cola bottles and mint imperials hide under a blanket of spiced apples and sultanas. Freshly polished oak develops.
Intense, with concentrated raisins, brown sugar syrup, rich fruit cake, buttered fruit loaf and pats of spiced butter. Strawberry jam sandwiches (on well buttered white bread) and spiced shortbread follow.
Spiced sponge cake and sultanas fade to leave stewed apple.
Rich and intense on the palate, with all of the (copious) cakes of my childhood rolled into one. The buttery spice and layers of jammy fruit are a testament to the quality of the wine casks used – a stunner.

Really surprised how balanced this is – thought it would be all wine influence but actually you get a huge heap of flavour coming through. I treated myself to a bottle for the cold winter nights but don’t think it’ll last the season.
This was my first non-Scottish whisky and it showed me that, much like in rugby, Scotland definitely doesn’t have the monopoly on greatness!
