American Single Malt Whiskey

The number of distilleries in the USA that make single malt whiskey is on the rise. Working outside the traditional styles of bourbon and rye whiskey, these adventurous producers take inspiration from Scottish tradition to create distinctly American single malts.

These distilleries are spread throughout the USA, with producers based in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, Iowa and Virginia, as well as the heartlands of American whiskey – Kentucky and Tennessee.

Pineau des Charentes

A traditional aperitif from Cognac, legend has it Pineau des Charentes was created when a winemaker poured grape juice into a barrel to make wine, not realising that the barrel already held some brandy.

This fruity French aperitif can be made in white, red and rosé styles that are delicious on the rocks or as part of a fruit-forward cocktail.

Eau-de-vie

Eau-de-vie is the name given to brandies made with any fruit except grapes – which is known as eau-de-vie du vin – and is typically bottled without aging to preserve the character of the fruit. Eaux-de-vie are made with a staggering array of raw ingredients, almost every fruit imaginable has been used to make eau-de-vie at some point in time. Fruity, elegant and complex, eaux-de-vie are great served chilled at the end of a meal.
