Tasting Notes from Whiskyfun (Serge Valentin)
Nose
Very elegant, starting on walnut cake and hints of gingerbread. Goes on with quite some vanilla and cinnamon, pollen, tobacco… Rather beautiful oakiness. Also fresh strawberries.
Mouth
creamy but nervous, with a smoky start, quite powerful and concentrated. Walnut liqueur, speculoos again like in the Miyagikyo, candy sugar. Slightly minty. Gets spicy (cloves), gingery… Long finish, faint cardboardiness, lots of spices, bitter chocolate, a little salt and various nuts. Bold and complex – different (very ‘Japanese’) but beautiful.
Score
87 points.

The absolute smoothest whiskey I have ever had - hands down
Really very nice stuff, this. That "cardboardiness" isn't so faint in my view, but it isn't cardboard. It's a Japanese smell/taste I can't put my finger on, but it took me back 25 years to when I was there! Not bad for a blind tasting. Hence, this dram reminds me just exactly how incredible malt whisky can be.
I thought it would be easy for me to find this in the United States. Come to find out, it is damn difficult. Thank god I have friends in Japan.
I traveled to Japan and visited the the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai. Brought with me a few bottles of this marvelous whisky which really surprised me with its honey/nut taste combined with the malty taste which I allways look for in a good bottle.
