From probably the oldest rum distillery in the world (dating from 1703), comes this legendary Barbados golden rum. Mount Gay Eclipse is absolutely superb value for money.

Mount Gay Eclipse Rum Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Producer's Tasting Notes

Brilliant golden amber in colour, Eclipse bears a luxuriously complex aroma whose rich, seamless harmony is interwoven with distinctive floral and fruity notes of apricot and banana, with hints of vanilla and a subtle smokiness imparted by the Kentucky oak barrels in which the rum is patiently aged.

I've been drinking MGR with tonic for several years, but think the taste has changed. Did tey change the formulation with the new label?

Tried Eclipse tonight for the first time. This is superb, IMO, which is that of a budget drinker. Drinking neat ATM; will try mixed eventually. (Holding a star for my need to gain experience.) ;-)

First time I tried it was as a duty free buy. Amazing. Not quite the same if bought locally, but not too shabby, very nice as a good sipping rum.

Decent smooth flavours, a bit too weak when sipped on the rocks.

I have a 12 year Appletons , it's not that good. For a third of the price, it's decent neat, awesome mixed, far better than anything within?5 up or down unless Appletons estate is on a massive promo

Tastes similar to Ron Zacapa 23 for 1/3 the price. It's the only rum I buy now. I'm a rum and coke drinker and this is hands down the best mixer.

This is not the smoothest rum I've ever drunk, but for the money it's very nice. I'd say it's better with a mixer my preference is pineapple juice.

I''ve favored MT Gay for 10myears - my supplier - DH has provided The Eclipse - I''m getting a quick zap of alcohol - acceptable - but don''t like the bitter aftertaste! This is recent stuff?

I found the alcohol a little overpowering, enough to bring a trace of that "catch" in the throat, however if one perseveres ( and who doesn't! ) then lovely warm honey flavours come through and you find yourself pouring another, very more-ish.

This is a mixer, a good one, still a mixer however. It is not good on its own with ice in my opinion, it is easily overpowered and swamped with water giving off a bitter after taste.

  • Whisky drinker 13 January 2014

Mount gay with ice is the sweetest smoothest rum I have ever tasted.

one of the better rums, not the best when taken neat, better mixing it.

  • The Colonel 27 March 2013

Not as good as Appleton Estate. Just tried a drop on its own and found the nose disappointing, the alcohol dominates any fruit. The palate is more balanced and quite smooth for a young rum but not rounded or complex enough for sipping neat. Good mixing rum though, I recommend making a punch with 1ltr fresh orange, 1ltr fresh pineapple, 250ml lime juice, a few dashes of Angostura bitters and a bottle of rum. Serve over ice with a grating of fresh nutmeg.
