The Astar bottling from Glenmorangie is a second incarnation of the much-loved Artisan cask bottling from several years ago. A massive dram, with huge spices - a drop of water is the sensible option.

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by TF

Nose:  Ginger, citrus, tweed, paprika, black pepper, becomes very deep with smoky vanilla.  Maybe it's the power of suggestion, but the oak is very noticeable - polished wood, like an expensive bookcase. More masculine and intense than the old Artisan, but you'd expect that from the higher abv.  Water opens up more sweet notes, natural caramel or butter toffee.

Palate:  Carries on from the nose.  Big, assertive and very bourbony.  Exceptionally spicy & peppery but with compensating sweet creamy vanilla.  Big mouth-filling weight - quite macho.  With water, much more approachable though still very spicy

Finish:  Immense.  Very long and warming, with tingling spices that last an eon.  My mouth was still burning (in a good way) several minutes after the swallow.

Comment:  If you're a committed sherryhead or you don't like oaky stuff or spicy food - avoid.  Everyone else will love it.  Very much of the same breed as the original Artisan cask, but less gentle - much more powerful and concentrated.  An epic dram that needs a drop or two of water to really shine.

I brought a bottle back from Scotland for my husband this summer. This is the best Scotch we have ever had. Friends continue to ask when am I returning to Scotland to purchase another bottle. I reside in Canada but was born in Scotland. If you ever need a sales rep on this side of the ocean we would love to promote your company.

This is my boom boom whiskey. For me the point of this whiskey is the strength and powerful long lasting taste hit when drunk straight. I can make a small glass of this last an evening because each tiny drop gives you a (refined) merry ride for a long time.

They say sherry-bomb or sherry-monster about heavily sherried whiskies, well this is a bourbon-monster. Huge vanilla and honey notes, floral, dried apricot, pears, woody notes in the background, high quality vanilla ice cream. The palate follows the nose, long woody spicy finish. A complex and top notch dram. A classic

I'm less impressed, unfortunately, as I expected more from it. Still it's a fine dram but I would not rate it above average. Especially since I discovered the brilliant Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban.

Glenmorangie 10 yr. on steroids. The sweetness has deepened a bit and is joined by a welcome spiciness. From candy corn to chocolate, from marshmallows to gummy worms, over time I have found the whole candy shop in this dram. It tastes like it came out of a Disney movie. Add water if you like; at cask strength, it's almost impossible to kill the flavour. This whisky knows exactly who it is.

I waited a long time to get this bottle as it has been hard to find in Australia, but it was well worth the wait. Lovely flavours, rich and defined and a crisp taste. One where the lack of an age statement shouldn't deter you from investing in it. Very much enjoyed :)

Maybe "rough around the edges" would be appropriate when rating the balance and finish. Nevertheless, this is 1 of my favorites. There's a large population that goes for the slightly off balance sweeter (vanilla, caramel, bourbon, orangey) taste; that's why they sell them. For such people, an awesome dram! Nose alone is a fantastic experience. Taste: hot peppery start with an explosion of the caramel, toasted wood

I too find this to be a wonderful pour. I have also never had anyone say something negative after a sip.
