Famously collectable, Macallan 1928 was originally sold in the UK, Germany, France and the USA for around £50, but as its reputation grew the price steadily increased. Interestingly, the whisky was bottled at its natural cask strength of 38.6%, well below the 40% standard which is now the legal minimum bottling strength for all whiskies.

Why isn't this dated as a 55yo? I guess they vatted a couple of casks with the youngest being 50 years. Underproofed whisky ocassionally gets an exception aqnd this one seems to be one of those exceptions.

No. Whisky is only considered to age for the number of years it spends in a barrel before bottling. After that, it remains at the age it was bottled at. If you buy a bottle of Macallan 10yo now, it will remain a 10yo whether you drink it next week, next year or your great-grandkids drink it in 100 years time.

Vintage 1928 - wouldn't that make it 82 years old now that we are in 2010?

Maybe the law that whisky had to be 40% hadn't been passed in 1983?

surely this cannot be classed as whisky? 38.6% is too low? it says 'scotch' on the label. naughty macallan.
