Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen set off for Cognac in 1903, with his good friend and fellow Norwegian, Peter Anton Rustad, who was already established in the region. Rustad took Bache-Gabrielsen on as his partner when they took over the firm of A. Edmond Dupuy in 1905. Thomas married Odette Villard in 1906, and became son-in-law to an old wine-growing family, strengthening the firm and adding to its knowledge of wine production. In 1916 Rustad died in a tragic motorbike accident and Thomas continued on his own. His connection with Scandinavia, and Norway in particular, has remained strong, with Bache-Gabrielsen being one of Norway most popular Cognac Brands.
