In 1898, August Ernst founded a self-named distillery in Bad Oldesloe, Germany, about 30 miles north of Hamburg. He starts with distilling korn, a type of schnapps made from fermented cereal grain, and kümmel for himself and his friends, and soon after finds customers in nearby villagers and farmers in the surrounding area under the brand name Oldesloer.
