The lost art of distilling in Wales was rekindled in a pub in Hirwuan in the late 1990s, when a group of friends dreamt of creating a whisky as precious as Welsh gold.

The distillery in located in the village of Penderyn, chosen for its picturesque views and abundance of natural spring water. A unique still was installed, designed by Dr David Faraday, a relative of 19th-century scientist Michael Faraday, before the distillery opened its doors in 2004. Before long the distillery needed expansion, and in 2013 and 2014 a replica of the Faraday still, as well as a pair of lantern stills, was installed and Penderyn continued to grow, and in May 2021 it opened a second distillery in Llandudno, with plans for a further distillery in Swansea, South Wales, in 2022.
