Discover Caribbean Rum

Four great distilleries, four unique styles

The tropical islands of the Caribbean are the cradle of rum as we know it. Distilling came to the region as way to turn molasses – a by-product of sugar production – into valuable spirit. From that common origin, various Caribbean nations have developed their own unique styles of rum, with flavours shaped by the local culture, history and landscape. These are four of the greatest distilleries in the world, all essential stops on your Caribbean rum tour.

Hampden Estate Logo

Funky, Fruity, Aromatic

This iconic Jamaican distillery is famous for intense pot still rums with a pronounced fruity and funky character. Hampden produces a range of different styles – or ‘marques’ – with different levels of esters. These flavour compounds are developed during fermentation and can evoke pineapples and mangoes, or olives and petrol, depending on the concentration. That might sound a little strange, but there’s a good reason this distillery is legendary among spirits enthusiasts the world over. Once you’ve acquired a taste for this style of rum, you’ll always go back to it.

Clement Rhum logo

Fresh, Grassy, Herbal

The French overseas departments of the Caribbean produce their own distinct rums made from fresh sugarcane juice, rather than molasses. This results in a grassy, slightly spicy style known as rhum agricole. Clement distillery in Martinique is well-known for its top-quality agricoles which range in style from fresh and slightly herbal unaged expressions to dark and rich rums aged for many years in French oak casks. This is worlds away from the intense funk of Hampden Estate, but no less characterful – testament to the great diversity of Caribbean rum.

Angostura logo

Rich, Mellow, Sweet

The story of Angostura begins in 1824, with the creation of the world-famous cocktail bitters in their namesake town in Venezuela. By the late 19th century, the Angostura company was buying, blending and selling rum from across the Caribbean, and in 1947 that the brand’s owners established their own distillery in Trinidad. Today, it produces rich and rounded molasses rums, as well as more than 2 million bottles of bitters every year. This is the perfect place to look for sweet and mellow rum that’s bold but still accessible.

Mount Gay logo

Fruity, Elegant, Refined

The oldest operational rum distillery in the world is in Barbados, the island often described as the birthplace of modern rum. It champions a layered, mellow style of molasses rum made by blending pot and column distilled marques. Far from being set in its ways, this centuries old producer continues to innovate. In recent years Mount Gay has used single estate cane to explore the influence of terroir in rum production and introduced expressions aged in port and sherry casks.
