Old Pulteney

Old Pulteney: New Fleet

Highland distillery Old Pulteney relaunched its range of whiskies in August 2018. Keeping the beloved 12 Year Old as the entry point to the collection, albeit in swish new packaging, the distillery has now added a 15, 18 and the no-age-statement Huddart, which takes its name from the street on which the distillery is situated, to its line-up.

All the new whiskies retain the maritime flavour that has won Old Pulteney so many fans, and each boasts a delightfully distinctive character that make them worth your consideration. Discover the new drams below.

An unusual twist on what we know and love from Old Pulteney – this whisky has been finished in casks that previously held peated malt. Smoky, oily and with lashings of fresh fruit, salt and honey.

Tasting notes from the producer

Nose
Rich and warming. Brimming initially with mellow wood smoke, honey and oily leather, blooming later into crisp green apple. Creamy vanilla and a hint of burnt toffee in the background.
Palate
Freshly-ground spices and soft vanilla balance the notes of smoke and peat fire. There are both richly sweet and distinctly salty coastal flavours in the background, together reminiscent of salted caramel.

      Nose
Intense yet balanced. Bursting with rich dried fruit, ripe apples and citrus, with honey sweetness and a generous chord of creamy vanilla. Slightly chocolaty and floral in the background.
      Palate
Fragrant spices and Christmas cake, with layers of chocolate and a distinct dark toffee sweetness. There is a hint of salty sea air on the finish, a clear connection to the influence of the sea on this single malt.

              About Old Pulteney

Pulteney distillery was built in 1826 in Wick, the historic Caithness fishing port at the northern end of Scotland's western coast. Production continued until 1930, when prohibition was introduced in Wick – a ban on alcohol that lasted an agonising 17 years! Old Pulteney eventually reopened in the early 1950s, and was substantially rebuilt towards the end of that decade.

Now owned by Inver House distillers, Old Pulteney has been rescued from being merely a blending ingredient in recent years and, in part thanks to recognition from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, is now well known for producing sought-after fruity, malty, sweet and salty single malts.
