This harmonious marriage of whiskies from Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries offers a complex nose of fresh berries and ripe tropical fruits, leading into a palate of apple tart, preserved apricots and aged cigars. The 21-year-old Hibiki offers a wonderful evolution of the style present in the well-loved 12 and 17-year-old expressions. The inclusion of mature whiskies aged in sherry butts and barrels made from rare Japanese oak, brings deep notes of assam tea, sandalwood, walnut wine and incense that are infinitely compelling. This is a dram that any fan of Japanese whisky should experience, a genuine classic.

This is stunning, nothing like it. I had the good fortune to drink this in Tokyo, in the same week I ‘endured’ a Blue Label fuelled flight from London. JW Blue Label is great but this really is on a whole different level. Smooth, not just depth of flavour but layers of flavor - it’s blend mastery at its finest and any single malt lovers that dismiss it haven’t tried it. Japanese single malts for this kind of money? No way - great - but not in this league. It’s like a gift that keeps on giving - a journey of taste discovery that presents subtle differences with every sip that you savour. Possibly the most expensive round I’ve ever bought but the perfect experience to share - the love for it was unanimous amongst my European, American and Japanese guests. Stunning.
The good: this is simply the smoothest and best whisky I've tasted recently. The bad: I will be a long time consumer and statistic of this fine whiskey and the demand for it... Well done Hibiki!
