Product Description
Released exclusively for Speciality Drinks, this is one of two bottlings in the Spirit of Asama collection, named after the active volcano near which the distillery once stood. Karuizawa distillery has become legendary among single malt fans since its closure in 2000, and with the two vintages used for this release dating from 1999 and 2000, it represents some of the last remaining whisky ever produced there. A rounded expression of the distillery’s character, it offers notes of leather, raisins and Brazil nuts, deepening into resin, oloroso sherry, grape skins and mixed nuts.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes by Tim F
Nose
Nutty and a little sappy at first, then a mossy earthiness, new leather, a grapey raisin character and a very faint hint of truffles. Develops very nice notes of brownies and chocolate fudge cake after a couple of minutes in the glass.
Palate
The grapey note is the main player initially, then some firm oak, chopped brazil nuts, pepper and clove spices and finally getting grapey again as the earthy notes appear. This is not the kind of sweet sherry one gets with an Aberlour, for example – it’s a drier sherry character. Lovely, slightly drying, mouthfeel makes it moreish.
Finish
Good length, becoming dry and more oak-tinged without any bitter notes creeping in.
Comments
A relatively gentle Karuizawa when compared to some of its merciless older siblings, but with plenty going on nonetheless. Very interesting to try the Karuizawa sherry style at this age, with the interplay of sweet, dry and savoury giving impressive depth for its comparative youth.

Customer Reviews
fantastic whisky...
This really is a lovely whisky. Nose very much fruit cake with cherries. Lovely legs and rich golden colour. Fruity notes in the mouth with apples and oranges, chocolate and a hint of smoke. Finish is medium leaving a lovely dry feel in the mouth. Karuizawa to drink not admire in a collection!
