The 5th in the Kilkerran Work in Progress series (distilled at Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown) is actually a pair of whiskies - a sherry and a bourbon cask matured whisky. This is the sherry wood matured dram, which has picked up some nice colour and flavour over its years in wood.

Nose
Rich and buttery, with brown sugar and cakespice. The waxiness found in the bourbon cask is also here, along with some honeysuckle, but they're overpowered by fruit - sultanas and stewed apple.

Palate
Oily and sweet, with more stewed apple and some charcoal touches. Floral touches and raisins sit behind the apple, along with some tingly cinnamon. It almost gets soapy, but stops just before it gets there.

Finish
Dark, woody spice lingers, along with some char, turning towards Digestive biscuits over time.

Both buttery and delightful - it's got a lot of things I like, with under-control floral touches and some nice dark, spicy bits.

Ulvedrengen: not necessarily — given that this is an operating distillery, they are producing new spirit all the time, and some spirit older than 3 years but younger than 8 could be included in this year’s WIP. There’s no way to know without an official age statement…

A wonderfully promising whisky of what is to come. Since it is the 5th WIP it has aged for 8 years (a spirit becomes a whisky after 3 years of aging in a barrel).

@Szarik: we think it's been the sherry cask for its entire maturation, but as we say below we don't know for sure how long that is. It should be 8 or 9 years.

We think it's about 8 years old, but they don't list an age statement.
