Customer Rating
A fresh and fruity whisky from Yamazaki, full of red fruit and a touch of sherry cask. It's also got some mizunara (Japanese oak) matured whisky in the mix, which comes through as a complex spicy and almost incense-like note. A well put together and deep dram.

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Andy M

Nose: The wine cask seems to dominate the nose here with strawberries and red fruit taking centre stage.  However, sitting quietly in the background is the incense from the mizunara, a hint of dried fruit from the sherry cask and a touch of coconut.

Palate: An abundance of red fruit again, with raspberries, strawberries and even redcurrants coming through, although there’s more dimensions to this than the first wine cask sample that we tried. White peach, a hint of wood and spice, back-up notes of red cherries and candied fruits all come into play here as well.

Finish: Relatively long finish with vanilla and sweet spice dancing around the tongue.

Comments: This seriously develops and expands on the three previous samples.  It’s really interesting to see how characters from each sample resonate onto this whisky but with so much more character coming into the final product.

The Yamazaki was delicious and lived up to its reputation. The service by the Whisky Exchange was also spectacular, couldn't recommend it enough!

This is a very nice Whisky. My only previous experience with Japanese Whisky was Nikka blend which I found bland. This is something completely different right up there with a good Scotch. Very sweet and I feel quite complex, definite undertone of Sherry and some spice. It has created a problem though! My wife doesn’t drink and shuddders every time she tries one of my whiskies. She tried this and thought it was lovely and keeps asking me if she’s can have a dram!! Think I may need to hide it. Give it a try and enjoy.

This is a truly smooth malt similar in taste to East Coast Whiskies so nice and light on the palate. My son bought a bottle for Father’s Day and that was my introduction to how good Japanese Whiskies can be. This is now on my list of firm favorites.

A bit sharper than the 12 year Yamazaki, but finishes just as smooth.

I've loved Yamazaki for a few years now--enough to order it occasionally since I can't get it locally. It's a departure from my normal go-to--the peaty Islay malts--but I love it because, while much lighter, it has a good flavor and just seems to have a little more substance than some lighter scotches I've had. It's satisfying enough to drink a little neat after dinner, but light enough to have on the rocks as a cocktail, which I would never do with my Lagavulin 16 or Bowmore 15.

Nothing short of delicious. First time having Japanese whiskey and I'd have to say I am now a fan.

Nice and mild but not much drama, it lacks some complexity.

There is huge value in this one. Not a terrible price and it holds up against my 18 and 21 year Japanese whiskys. I bought a second bottle to avoid any price jumps on this should I have tried to buy it months later.

This was my very first whisky. I've had several since, but the sweetness and the pleasant glow this one leaves behind as you drink it keeps bringing me back. Sweet on the front of the tongue and spicy at the back - you'll see what I mean. It's really pleasant. Highly recommend.

A good whisky especially if you are interested in trying a fruity japanese malt, but at this price your money is better spent on a bottle of quinta ruban. Nikka from the barrel is also a better option all round. This one is a bit hyped up, much like the yamazaki 12yo
