Tasting Notes by Billy A
Nose: Cinder toffee, nutmeg and wine gums – red and green – with grainy honey, treacle toffee, eccles cakes and some savoury meaty notes developing. As it sits in the glasses, it grows in complexity, with dark fruit cake, clove, allspice and soft brown sugar joined by concentrated orange.
Palate: Thick, oily and sweet to start. Spicy, stewed raisins and sweet black liquorice sit alongside thick caramel and layers of spice: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and allspice. Over time some more intense notes appear, almost verging on mint and menthol.
Finish: Mint chocolate, dark chocolate digestive biscuits, liquorice root and peeled grapes.
Comment: A whisky that shows off its sherried components but doesn't go too far down that route, with bourbon-cask-matured spirit adding balance and drawing it back from the brink.
