Customer Rating
Peat is the first ongoing release from Speciality Drinks' Elements of Islay series. A blend of single malts from around the island, this is a big, punchy 'full-throttle' dram with notes of roasted fruit, smoke and roasted spice.
This is some mega-smoky, almost pleasantly brutal peated whisky. 89 points –  Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Stuart P

Nose: Fresh and fruity at first, with notes of lemon and orange oil, joined by roasted almonds and dark chocolate and enveloped by layers of warming peat smoke. Water brings out more refreshing citrus notes.

Palate: Richly textured, with pear and melon and a sprinkling of black pepper and honeyed fruit. Again, the soft smoke arrives, with bonfire embers imparting a lovely warmth and character.

Finish: Clean and fruity, with the soft wood smoke lingering.

Comment: There’s a lot to like about this whisky. It doesn’t try too hard, and instead shows the things that Islay fans love: peat, smoke and fruit. I’m not sure that water improves this whisky, either; I think it’s pretty well balanced as it as, despite the high ABV.

  • Producer's Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh, sprightly barley entwined with peat smoke and bonfire embers. Bracing aromas of salty seaweed and seashells. Plenty of clean fruit – lemon, lime and grapefruit, while hiding underneath are notes of rich earth and liquorice.

Palate: Warm and leathery with thick-cut bacon, seashore campfires and roasted fruit: sweet apple and lime with a sprinkle of caster sugar. Layers of smoke and dark-chocolate limes envelope the palate and are intertwined with softer lemon oil and BBQ sauce, with hints of roasted spices and barrel char, complementing the peat and smoke.

Finish: Sea spray and baked apple fade leaving heavier smoke, truffle salt and sweet spice.

Excellent whisky. It might not be as bold or as subtle as some of the Islay single malts, but it offers a gorgeous peat at an incredible level of balance. Smooth as a feather despite the high abv. It might offer a bit more width than depth, but then do those words even make sense? I tried a few of the "Elements of Islay" malts at a whisky fair and this was definitely the one standing out. Bought it from here and it's great value for money.

This has been purchased as a Christmas present so I am unable to properly rate it. However, I do know that the recipient thinks it is one of the best whiskys he has ever had so on that basis I give it 5 stars

Excellent, tried it in the shop and bought a bottle as a present, tried it again after it was opened and very impressed. Big fiery smoke, very warm thanks to being nearly 60%! but somehow the flavours aren't drowned out by the alcohol. Going to have to buy a bottle for myself now.

Delicious. Delighted that it has been bottled at cask strength and not diluted. Fresh and sweet with a beautiful lingering finish. Hope this will continue to be available.
