Loch Lomond Steam and Fire
Product Description

This bottling is a testament to the engineering capability of Loch Lomond distillery, using both straight neck and a traditional swan neck still. It was then finished in heavily charred casks prepared by its own on-site cooperage. Aromas of demerara sugar, fudge and cinnamon fill the nose, leading to stewed fruit notes of orange and peach, followed by coffee and dark chocolate on the palate.

Review: Loch Lomond Steam & Fire (46% ABV) The Concept Don’t let the name mislead you—this is not a "peat monster". While many expect a smoky Islay-style dram, this expression is a tribute to the craftsmanship of the distillery’s own cooperage. It is all about the "fire" used to heavily char the casks, rather than peat smoke used to dry the barley. Aroma & Texture Straight from a fresh bottle, the whisky can be a bit tight and needs time to open up. A fascinating hallmark of a fresh bottle is that if you let it rest in the glass for about 20 minutes, distinct lactic notes—reminiscent of fresh yogurt or dairy—begin to emerge. The texture is impressively oily and "chewy," a signature result of Loch Lomond’s unique straight-neck stills and the lack of chill-filtration. Palate The profile is dominated by a rich, woody sweetness. You will find notes of toasted marshmallows, melted toffee, and dark chocolate. The "fire" manifests as a sophisticated bitterness of charred wood and roasted coffee beans, providing a perfect balance to the sweeter elements. The Water Effect This dram truly transforms with the addition of just a couple of drops of water. The dilution unlocks a hidden layer of intense malted sweetness and the comforting aroma of fresh pastry or buttery brioche straight from the oven. It smooths out the oaky tannins and makes the entire experience much more expansive and layered. Final Verdict An excellent choice for those who enjoy structural, wood-forward whiskies with a heavy mouthfeel. It is a masterclass in how precise cask charring can deliver "dark" and complex flavors without relying on peat.
