Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Billy A

    • Nose

Light fruit cake packed with spice, buttery baked apples, butterscotch, barley sugar, brioche and stroopwaffel. Behind the sweet spice lies a layer of citrus – dried orange peel and lemon zest – and nuts – almonds and hazelnuts.

    • Palate

Juicy and mouthwatering, with thick stewed fruit, nutmeg, liquorice and butter toffee notes up front. Those part to reveal buttery apple pies with cinnamon, dried apricots, clove-studded oranges and rich, dark fruit cake.

    • Finish

Liquorice, dark chocolate and rich chocolate brownies. The chocolate fades to leave aniseed and raisins.

    • Comment

Thick rich and sweet, without becoming cloying, this is sherried Balblair at it's best – while the cask has had a huge influence, you can still taste the zesty distillery character.

Really smooth and exotic tasting, perhaps a touch on the steep side but a great experience.

An outstanding Whisky for the money. Buy two quickly, one to drink and one to hold as in the future it's going to be one of those whiskies you just wish you had in your collection.

Amazing. This whisky is a gem. For those who like a whisky with a good mouthful taste, this is perfect. This is a very rich whisky, to appreciate after dinner, but also before dinner while having a nice long rest after work.

Re review - I think its important to admit when your wrong and still perhaps not as experienced as you'd thought. After some 4-5 weeks, having got through a third of this bottle, it had settled and was a different whiskey all together. I don't know if if it was particularly shaken up during delivery or what but as my previous review suggests, I couldn't balance mine dram with h20 and I am no stranger to cask a strength bottle, indeed most of my collection are currently from independent bottlers. Anyway, when this beast of a whiskey came into its own, it became everything I hoped it would be when I selected it. I found it very true to the tasting notes provided and have to say that its one of the best I have ever had, I would say its easily the best non heated whiskey I have ever bought a full bottle of. I would give this 4.5, deducting half because it took a third of a bottle to come around (my bottle did anyway). If you feel like splashing out, look no further, I am considering getting another one as I regard it as the perfect Christmas Malt.

I am no expert but this is my favourite whiskey up to now and with no water addition. Very rich flavour unlike any other without being too intense. 5 stars.
