Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting note by Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Singed leaves, sweet peat and damp earth – a mismanaged forest campfire after a rainstorm. Sweeter notes build, with pink shrimp sweets, joined by crashing waves and damp leather. Soft spicey notes develop, along with pine trees and a touch of lime.

    • Palate

Chocolate-covered pine needles and leafy undergrowth. The sweetness from the nose is here too, with icing sugar and barley sugar balanced by zesty lime.

    • Finish

Minerally and minty, with leathery smoke and sawdust touches.

    • Comment

Definitely sweeter than I expected, but still a raw but well-balanced display of Lagavulin’s ‘other side’.

Just arrived today and so we built a fire in the backyard and sampled it. Excellent in all respects. Not too rough on the front end and a nice lingering fruit on the back. Just the right touch of smoke. The nose on opening the bottle was a nice foreshadowing of what was to come.

A wild whisky that feels very vibrant on the palate. The nose is not very different from the 2017 expression with several citrus fruits and mint dominating. The palate is a little sweeter but still very fresh. I can’t think of a whisky even remotely similar to this, maybe it’s just me but this is like heaven at sunset.

Oh my word! I was given a Christmas present of a sizeable sample from my Ain;'t no foolin' Lagavulin Ambassador friend. It's definitely a much sweeter Lag 12 - Almost the Distillers Edition, cask strength! Amplified fruit and farmyard on the nose along with what I misread Billy's notes for "Sweat peat" . That'll do! A little more surprise complexity on the palate than I remember. A wee bit richer. Tarry chocolate and...DAMN! My Sample is finished! Gone! A slightly short finish, though the slightly sweet ( and yes, Billy - minerally and mentholated ) hints linger on the Islay breeze! Well, I HAD to order a bottle from you....a Christmas after lunch treat. 5 1/2 points. OK, folks. That's a dram you owe Colin...
