Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Joe Rogers (The Whisky Exchange)

    • Nose

Caramelised pecans, walnut liqueur, honey roasted cashews. Plums, figs, raisins and dried cranberries. There’s a green side that you sometimes find in old pot still whiskey with blackberry leaves, vine leaves and a little spearmint.

    • Palate

Peanut brittle, a few dried chillis, some black peppercorns. Lots of umami with oxidised sherry notes, warm earth, dried shiitakes, barley miso, and cacao nibs. Then hazelnuts, liquorice, nutmeg, bitter oranges and crème de cassis. A dash of water brings out big chocolaty notes and more nutty sherry character.

    • Finish

Long, with a nice tension between oak tannins and milk chocolate.

Old-style whiskey

Single pot still Irish whiskey is increasingly popular with spirits lovers and collectors, and for good reason. At one point, this style looked like it might be lost to history, but it’s thanks to the painstaking efforts of distilleries new and old that we have pot still whiskies like Redbreast to enjoy today. This exquisite 25-year-old expression, aged in a single ex-cream sherry cask, is a quintessential taste of this old-fashioned whiskey, full of vibrant fruit and cereal flavours and spicy sherried character.

About Redbreast

With roots stretching back to 1939, Redbreast is a much-loved, celebrated and historic name, and one of the icons of Irish whiskey today. Now made at Midleton distillery in County Cork, it was relaunched in 1990 as the group’s flagship single pot still whiskey, known for its luxurious, bold flavours and sherry cask maturation.
