Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Mark Gillespie, World Whiskies Awards 2012

Clean and buttery with hints of ginger, hazelnut and marzipan. Spicy with strong cinnamon bite and a hint of anise on top with touches lemon. Lemon tartness balanced with cinnamon spiciness that fades slowly.

After being legally poisoned by the many Scottish cooking whiskies for nearly24 years I happened to have to make a trip to somewhere close to Colleraine ( SP). My host suggested than my wife & I take in the Bushmills distillery as they knew we''d done some 12 or so Scottish whisky trails . After standing back and letting the alchol dependent try and snaffle the biggest free tasters we asked one of the fantastic staff if we could try a few more different products once the crowd had gone. We ende d up buying two 60 year old bottles of Bushmills single .. well worth the price but it did stretch the bank account a bit more than we''d hoped. Well we moved on to some place that was some lords hunting lodge and stayed the night .. in the morning when we got up at 06.30 we found we''d quietly & happily supped over 3/4 of the bottle but we didn''t feel any the worse for wear. After a hearty breakfast Irish style we continued on our journey . I still find it amazing the we didn''t feel hung over or have the Scottish whisky stomach burn that both of us occasionally got after just one double of any of their whiskies. We are now total converts to Bushmils single malts and have now been in this happy state for over 36 years . I know nothing of the poncy classifications and snob words used for describing the Bushmills single whiskey but I do agree that they are worth all those gold medal awards many many times over .

Not what you''d expect from a Bushmills blend. I think this was originally going to be launched as a single Malt but luckily the went for this version. Excellent whiskey. I''ve exhausted funds buying enough to last me. I''m drinking a bottle as I write.

Smooth yet full bodied- with hints of honeyed sweetness. I was thrilled to locate this whiskey via your site!

Fantastic. Ignore the negative comments and Jim Murray's review. This is extremely good irish whiskey and an absolute steal at under £40! Thank you very much whisky exchange!

Really great whisky but beside the 16 triple wood it comes in second!

Tried this on the Bushmills brewery tour and loved it.Bought a bottle.Very smooth taste with an interesting kick going down, I do prefer mine with a touch of water. The presentation box is very suitable for giving it as a gift, present or prize.

This may be a blend, but if you read up on it there is very little grain whiskey in there. It is almost all Crystal Malt Whiskey, that in itself makes it unique. A small amount of grain is added simply to make it taste better. What is wrong with making a whiskey taste better?

Simply the best whiskey I have ever had. Forget prejudices against blends; this blows away single malts of ten times the price.

Finally found somewhere to purchase the 1608!!! Bought a bottle for my husband when returning to the UK from Canada - he loved it and it was rationed accordingly. Definitely the best of the Bushmills family of whiskey

Wondering if this would be a good gift for a collector? Found it under $50 in Alberta

I bought a bottle of this, partly on the strenth of the good reviews posted here. I save to say that like its stablemate Blackbush it smells and tastes great, until you swallow and the grain whiskey kicks in. Its a shame this could not have been a blend of Bushmills malts rather than malt and grain. In future I will stick with the fantastic Bushmills 10 year old single malt.

This is an absolutely gorgeous whiskey; very toffee and vanilla, with a bit of nuttiness and tons of spice. I prefer this straight out of the bottle because I feel that water reduces the intensity of the flavor, but water will cream out the palate and make it more approachable to someone who doesn't like the intense pepper this brings to the back of the throat.

Tried the 400 at the distillery on 16th March enjoyed ever sip and bought the 16 year old for my husband he already had the 400. Always love the visit around the distillery and have become a convert to the tipple. See you soon

Quite possibly one of my all time favourite whiskies.Bought a bottle off the back of a review and have never regretted it.

The best Bushmills expression I've had so far and well worth the money. Much more character than the 10 Year Old single malt or even the 16 Year Old three wood. Amazing (and great packing too!)

Never put the pure brown sugar before the dirty green cream.

This whiskey is NOT to be missed or taken for granted. We used to drink Middleton exclusively. But I must say, the Bushmill's 1608 has by far a more lush and textured flavor ranging from nuts to caramel, to honey -- it is simply smooth and utterly fantastic! And, being a lot less expensive than Middleton, Bushmills 1608 can't be beat. Highly recommended.- Brendan O.
