Now made in England at a lower strength, with the warmth provided by extra ginger in the recipe, this unique liqueur was created for King Edward VII to keep him warm on drives in his new open top Daimler car. The distinctive smooth ginger flavour is perfectly balanced by a pleasingly clean, dry finish.Tasting Notes (1)
Producer's Tasting Notes
Hay and straw, rich golden syrup.
It is unmistakably Ginger – a cloud of fresh natural ginger with a faint aura of zesty lemon swiftly entices the first sip.
The initial flow of ginger syrup sweetness is gently interrupted by the tingle of fresh ginger and a subtle and gentle uplift of lemon citrus. Warm, fulfilling and of great length.
Very disappointed.nothing like I expected or like the original in a black bottle.
I love ginger so was really excited to get a bottle and try this, but can't tell you how disappointed I was. While there is the warmth of ginger, all I got was lemons. I think a more accurate description would be "limoncello with a hint of ginger", rather than "unmistakably Ginger...with a faint aura of zesty lemon". Not at all what I expected. It appears the rebranding and new recipe - I guess to try and bring in new customers - has come at the cost of the original product.
Beware! This is remarkably different from the old recipe (thankfully still available here at the Whisky Exchange). Any comment before autumn 2020 refers to the old blend, not this new one. The ABV has dropped but much more significant is that the new taste is rough! Really irritates the back of my throat and the three friends I've tried it on disliked it intensely. We were all big fans of the old blend. Such a shame.
Nothing like as good as the original in the lovely brown bottle, and you've halved the abv.
Too spicy hot for my own personal liking to be enjoyed on its own, but turned rather cheap sparkling wine into something special. (I had no Champagne) Put a splash on some warm poached peaches, nearly blew my head off. I'm looking forward to experimenting with other deserts.
