A huge thank you to the team at The Whisky Exchange for making this bottle possible. My first experience with Foursquare Mystique 14 Year Old was fascinating — and definitely not an easy rum at first. At 62% ABV, the first encounter is powerful, but giving it time in the glass completely changes the experience. On the nose, I found a very interesting combination: the refined citrus and orange peel notes reminded me somewhat of Appleton 21, while the structure and depth brought back memories of Flor de Caña 25. Dried fruits, dark notes and, especially, liquorice gradually became more apparent as the rum opened up. But what impressed me most was the texture. There is a remarkable viscosity and almost oily creaminess on the palate. It completely fills the mouth, and the finish is exceptionally long. The alcohol never really disappears — it becomes integrated. Once the initial intensity settles, layer after layer starts to reveal itself. Orange peel and dried fruit remain throughout the palate, with that liquorice note adding another dimension. It is powerful, but at the same time remarkably rounded, elegant and composed. Compared with Foursquare Magisterium, Mystique felt less assertive and more integrated to me — more velvety and rounded, with the texture being perhaps its most distinctive quality. And this was only the first pour from a freshly opened bottle. I’m very curious to see how it evolves over time. A complex, challenging and deeply rewarding rum. Thank you, The Whisky Exchange. This one was quite an experience.
Just tried this rum,which I found delicious. Nose - sweet scented floral with heavy fruit notes. Palate - really fruity, lemon/vanilla twang, with spiceness throughout and a dry tobacco seething through. touches of vanilla and prune Finish - covers the palate exceptionally well, long dry finish accentuating the tobacco and spice . Comment : If you're a bourbon fan , you won't be disappointed...
Over my lifetime I have tried many different hi end rums. All have their own distinctive flavour. This Mystique from The Foursquare Distillery is the best yet. Can't say fairer than that.
