Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Red, purple and orange jelly babies, sweet and fruity with a touch of the tropical. The fruit sharpens slightly as underripe mango and papaya develop, joined by a spoon of scooped out passion fruit innard. A hint of spicy grain rolls through the middle followed by rich, dark fruit cake.

    • Palate

Thick, rich, oily and intense. A compressed ball of tropical-fruit jelly surrounded by flashed apple, pear, gummi bear and jelly baby. Gentle spice builds, followed by a hint of mint and menthol. Vanilla toffees hide out at the back with a handful of tarragon.

    • Finish

Tropical fruit and toffee fade to leave a tingle of menthol.

    • Comment

The port hasn’t been laid on thick, and the bourbon casks in the mix give the whiskey the fruity, old-Irish-whiskey character that I’m looking for in something that’s been aged this long. The port and sherry casks add another dimension without swamping the spirit. For me, this is what blending is all about – layering and combining flavours to give a balanced whiskey that isn’t dominated by one component.

  • Joe Rogers, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Papaya salad, mango juice, orange and lime zests, peaches, and wildflowers. Water shows a slightly spicy side with dried chillies, liquorice and red berries

    • Palate

Big passionfruit and blackcurrants, blood orange liqueur, some apple mint and grapefruit, more papaya salad with extra Thai basil. Raisins, dried cherries, and dark chocolate. Hot honey, Ceylon cinnamon and crème brûlée. Something untamed and green hides underneath everything like wild herbs – that elusive pot still whiskey spice.

    • Finish

Oily and persistent with a warming sensation like Szechuan peppercorns.

I guess I’ll be the first A-hole to say this... not worth the money. Plain and simple. The price to value ratio simply isn’t there. Given the value that the 21y puts out, this is a far cry for the money. It is an amazing whiskey, just not at this cost. The bloody box alone looks fancier than something you would burry someone in. Dear Redbreast - give the consumer a break by saving €80 on not using such flashy packing for the fecking box. The juice is not worth the squeeze, but decide for yourself.

    Damoo

An utterly thick, luscious, intense, rich, warm whiskey. Backed by the fruitiness, oak spice and the oloroso sherry cask influence, the layered ‘berry’ flavours from the ruby port wine casks makes it more complex & enjoyable. A superb dram
