Tormore Single Malt Scotch Whisky

TormoreSingle Malt Scotch Whisky

Completed in 1959, Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Speyside since the beginning of the twentieth century, and the product of a singular vision. Designed to produce an elegant, fruity spirit, most of the whisky made here over the last 60 years went straight into blends. Now, under the stewardship of Elixir Distillers, Tormore is once again poised to impress with its single malts.

Tormore Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Tormore was the first distillery to be built in the Highlands in the 20th century, a circumstance that generated considerable interest. The architect of the new distillery was Sir Albert Richardson, the president of the Royal Academy, and the distillery buildings are so pretty that the distillery's appearance has been likened to a spa by more than one commentator.

Despite these favourable characteristics (and its large capacity of over 3.5 million litres/year), Tormore today languishes in anonymity. This is mostly because almost all of the production from the distillery is destined for owners Chivas Group's blended whiskies (the distillery was bought as part of the Allied Domecq acquisition by Chivas parent Pernod Ricard in 2005).

The present official bottling of Tormore is a 12 year old, although an Allied-era 15yo is also still available. Independent bottlings are unusual. Michael Jackson describes the house style as 'Nutty. Firm, smooth.Versatile. Perhaps best as a restorative.'
