Bitter Is Better

Cocktail bitters are intensely flavoured tinctures used to enliven drinks – due to their strength you’ll normally need only a few drops for a big impact. They became popular in the 1800s when people - including Dr Johann Siegert, creator of Angostura Bitters – discovered that these medicinal creations (in Angostura’s case, a cure for stomach-ache) also had other, tastier uses.
