A handsomely presented decanter-style bottle of Plantation Extra Old rum from Barbados. The rums are initially aged in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks then transported to the Charente (home of Plantation's owner, Cognac producer Pierre Ferrand) and undergoing a second maturation in small French oak casks.

Plantation Extra Old Barbados Rum Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by The Whisky Exchange

Nose: Flambéed bananas, toasted coconut, marshmallow, and spice. Cherry and vanilla develop.

Palate: Balanced spice and oak, with black pepper, sweet cream and dark tobacco notes.

Finish: Very long, with sweet spice and toasted oak fading to reveal fruit.

  • Tasting Notes by Stuart P

Nose: Rich, tempting aromas of flambéed bananas, toasted coconut shavings, a touch of marshmallow and a faint grassy note. Then aromas of spices waft up through the glass – cinnamon and nutmeg – as well as juicy cherries, vanilla and toffee.

Palate: Superb balance between spice, toasty oak and a creamy, peppery note. Sweet and luxurious, but with more savoury notes of tobacco and dark chocolate, creating lovely balance. The complexity builds, with layers of spice growing over time. Beautifully soft texture.

Finish: Very long lasting, with the sweet spices complementing the toasty oak and fruit.

Comment: I would defy anyone not to enjoy this. Easy to drink, but tons of complexity, and  a rum that rewards slow sipping. Excellent.

Had a glass to finish a lunch yesterday. Served neat in a cognac glass, it was a revelation. Several leagues ahead of the Diplomatico I'm drinking now.

This is a very complex rum with a creamy feel with notes of oak, coconut, spices, toffee and chocolate. Everything is perfectly balanced from the sweetness to the smooth taste which all builds up to a fiery finish from the alcohol giving you a strong warmth as you swallow. The taste also lingers in your throat for a good while after. Its also not as dark and heavy as some rums and has a lighter feel to it on the taste front. I can't see how rum can get much better than this. Wow!

I recently bought a bottle of this and was hoping for great things. In fact although it's a pleasant and easy to like spirit it wasn't in my opinion as great as expected. For me it is too sweet tasting almost as though sugar has been added to the spirit. Worth noting that this scored only 50/100 last week on a well respected website. I chose to use the rum for spicing in the end (adding orange peel, cloves, etc etc) which I felt would better suit it's taste profile. This worked out quite well but I won't buy any more of this particular expression - it's just sweet to extreme levels.

I have never left an online review for any product, as I am a bit of a Luddite, but this plantation rum really is the best I have tried. I agree with the other reviewers, concerning taste . Drink neat only to appreciate the flavour. Enjoy

I was given this rum as a gift and it is without a doubt one of the best plain style rums I have tried. Its smooth in the palate and the aromas of light coconut, vanilla and subtle toffee and banana are delicious. Its a rum which shouldn''t be spoilt with mixers, neat or with ice.

Amazing! Superbly smooth and easy to drink, can have it plain or with ice (too good for a mixer) its hard to stop at just one!

This was my first premium rum purchase as I wanted to branch out from whisky. Absolutely stunned by it on first sip. So smooth, beguiling flavour, amazing mouth-feel. I have tried a lot of whiskies and I will be trying a lot of rums after this. Banana, date, vanilla, gentle oak, but more than the sum of its flavours.

A lovely supping rum. Had a couple of glasses in a restaurant a few weeks ago. Ordered a bottle the next day. I agree with a previous review that it slightly edges the Ron Zacapa.

  • Mike Wood 18 July 2013

Absolutely superb. Pound for pound my sipping friends and I rate this as highly, if not better, than the Zacapa XO - at half the price. My be a slight bias as I generally favour Bajan aged amber rums, but definitely worth a try if you like similar.
