Sixty years ago, I had heard the name of Wincarnis from my father who had brought it to my mother when she was expecting my younger brother! That was the first time I had heard the name. It stuck in my memory and, when I saw it on the shelves in Singapore, it did ring a loud bell. Interestingly, my son brought a bottle of Wincarnis with ginger when he came from the USA. It is indeed a tonic wine, a wee bit too sweet for my taste, but when I share with my son, it becomes a tradition stretching over three generations.

I bought this tonic wine as a Christmas present so cannot comment on the wine itself. However, I must say that I was very impressed with the service of The Whiskey Exchange,as I received my order within a couple of days.

When I think of another famous tonic wine I think of ladies partaking of scones and tea on the lawn outside their country cottage and retiring indoors to partake of their small glass of tonic wine. When I think of Wincarnis I think of the same thing but the location is some faraway colony of the British Empire. Oh yes, Wincarnis is that traditional and probably no coincidence that it is enjoyed in former British colonies. On the nose it's port wine but the taste and colour is that of spicy cream sherry. It's sweet but not cloying as we find with some cream sherries. If you manage to dribble a bit down the side of your glass you'll notice that it's a little bit sticky too. Overall 5 stars because it is not the cheap plonk it at first appears to be and the added herbal infusions is the bonus. Recommended as an anytime drink for anyone who likes a little tipple of sweet wine and it will also work well with a sweet pudding. Personally I take a small glass before bed and I do have a peaceful sleep all night long.
