Bain's is the first South African single grain whisky, made in Wellington at the James Sedgwick distillery. Bain's has made an impressive debut in the UK, picking up a Gold Medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2010 and a Silver at the International Spirits Competition before crowning that with the title of World's Best Grain Whisky at the World Whisky Awards.

    Wee toon sailor,

For the price - a pleasant, easy drinking whisky. Smooth, and with a soft caramel aftertaste. Not much depth though, I’ll be sticking to malt.

Quite a bit of toffee and vanilla but a very nice and moreish whisky. This is my first experience of Bains and it certainly won't be the last. A good introductory grain whisky - not overly complex and very good value for money.

    Jim Weiss,

I enjoyed Johnny Walker Black before they dropped it to 80 proof - a huge mistake. I have looked for an affordable whiskey that was 86 proof or more and found it - today. Fortunately I bought 3 bottles. It is nice, smooth, full -bodied. Glad I found it. Full marks SA.

    Fritz (Fish Hoek),

I haven't drank this dram for quite a while. That is good because I have a better appreciation for whisky now. I love Peaty whiskies so have been enjoying Laphroaig 10yrs and Three Ships 10yr and 5 yr. It is nice to have something on the other side of the spectrum than my love for peat, and this is where you strike gold with Bain's. Can't escape the sweet smooth vanilla/buttery taste, which is awesome, and then the it goes to the back of my tongue, the more "traditional" whisky taste blends in with it. Yes, I am South African and biased towards this whisky, but good is good ;) This whisky is made by the same guy who makes the Three Ships range in the same distillery/winery, so for real value for money you have to try the Three Ships range too.
