Customer Rating

A special pot still whiskey-heavy version of Jameson. Black Barrel has lots of first-fill bourbon and sherry casks in the mix, giving it a much richer flavour than regular Jameson, with a strong sherried note.

Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Stuart P

    • Nose:

Soft barrel-char aromas, along with sweet barley and cereal.

    • Palate:

Very soft and smooth. Subtle spiciness and barrel char comes through, along with fresh fruitiness.

    • Finish:

      Smooth and balanced.

  • Tasting Notes by Dominic Roskrow for Whisky Advocate

    • Bright sparks, these Jameson guys. This takes all the worldwide quality and balance of the standard bottle and adds a large dollop of pot still whiskey, providing plummy, rich fruits to the mix. They may have also upped the effects of oak, too, so there's an extra depth to the whiskey. Fans of the brand will love it, and pot still whiskey fans will appreciate an affordable full-flavoured blend.

Great value for the money. Smooth, just enough char, and a very distinct aftertaste.

Objectively, I say: very good whisky. Quite smooth, tastes great. Character and quality. But, ten dollars more than Blackbush. Equal to Blackbush, but couldn’t hold a candle to Bushmills 10 year (about same price).

Smooth no harsh after taste. It’s a great drink. I definitely recommend to anyone.

Whiskey is just decent. I have been drinking Jameson for a long time. Finish on this whiskey is very bitter - not good.

In Ireland, home of it, its 50 euros. At maybe 40 it would be worth the bottle. Its nice – cream and peach on the taste, medium finish but there is an opening of spice, nutmeg and clove. 3 pinches of water bring out a bite and spice maybe cinnamon and plum. Vanilla ice cream finish. Nice, complex but at its current price I'd pass.

Having a very good collection of Scots Whisky this is my first experience of Irish Whiskey direct from the distillery in Dublin, the triple distillation creates an absolutely beautiful full bodied well rounded smooth whiskey with no harsh after taste, the warmth of the liquid flows smoothly over your tongue with the slight spice and dark barrel undertones lingering.... one of my top 3, not bad for my first glass!

Really smooth, great flavor. As a long time Bourbon lover, this is a really nice alternative. Recommend.

Outstanding whiskey. Much smoother than regular Jameson’s. Great whiskey for celebratory event or just sipping to relax!

Wonderful stuff. Lots of toffee and brioche flavours with some dark fruits (think dates and raisins) and just the right amount of oak and spice. The Single Pot Still character is the star of this show. I’d rate this 88 or 89 out of 100. Terrific value for the money.

I received a bottle as a gift. I’m a long time Jameson drinker but this is awful — undrinkable. Is it possible that it is just a bad bottle?

As a rule I don't rate 5 out of 5, but I want to. This is hands down the most drinkable whisky I've come across. It's almost dangerous how easy it goes down...very much a cereal caramel vanilla taste and I love it

As Jameson's is my go to, never leave home without it whiskey, I expected only good things from Black Barrel. Think of it as Jameson's with a bonus. A deep, sweet, spice that isn't sugary but comforting. If you are an Irish drinker that enjoys an occasional bourbon, this is a sure thing.

Jameson's have here a smooth cross between Irish pot still and US Bourbon, but too smooth and sweet for this Islay fan. Great value when on special for $60 AU.

My husband is a Jamiesons drinker, and has had many of the 'specials', and he is delighted with Black Barrel, it has a strong but smooth taste, and I like it too; and I'm not a whiskey drinker.

For the price, you can't beat it. It has great flavor while maintaining its smoothness. It has sweet high and undertones that leaves a delight aftertaste as well.
