Customer Rating
A special pot still whiskey-heavy version of Jameson. Select Reserve has lots of first-fill bourbon and sherry casks in the mix, giving it a much richer flavour than regular Jameson, with a strong sherried note.

Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Stuart P

Nose: Soft barrel-char aromas, along with sweet barley and cereal.

Palate: Very soft and smooth. Subtle spiciness and barrel char comes through, along with fresh fruitiness.

    Finish: Smooth and balanced.

Bright sparks, these Jameson guys. This takes all the worldwide quality and balance of the standard bottle and adds a large dollop of pot still whiskey, providing plummy, rich fruits to the mix. They may have also upped the effects of oak, too, so there's an extra depth to the whiskey. Fans of the brand will love it, and pot still whiskey fans will appreciate an affordable full-flavoured blend.

As Jameson's is my go to, never leave home without it whiskey, I expected only good things from Black Barrel. Think of it as Jameson's with a bonus. A deep, sweet, spice that isn't sugary but comforting. If you are an Irish drinker that enjoys an occasional bourbon, this is a sure thing.

Jameson's have here a smooth cross between Irish pot still and US Bourbon, but too smooth and sweet for this Islay fan. Great value when on special for $60 AU.

My husband is a Jamiesons drinker, and has had many of the 'specials', and he is delighted with Black Barrel, it has a strong but smooth taste, and I like it too; and I'm not a whiskey drinker.

For the price, you can't beat it. It has great flavor while maintaining its smoothness. It has sweet high and undertones that leaves a delight aftertaste as well.

Excellent whiskey! So much better than American distilled. Straight up or with a coke!

I really, really like this - a lot. Having drunk a lot of fine (read expensive) scotch whiskey, personally I prefer this. It's so smooth and easy to drink. With scotch I always add a drop of water to open it up, with this, and most Irish whiskey, it doesn't need it. My tastes, at the ripe old age age of 58, are leaning to drinking more Irish than scotch whiskey, and this is one of the best you'll ever try and for the price it's a steal!

I've only recently gotten into trying Jameson whiskey. I started with the plain Jameson, and quickly became fond of it. Aromatic, with a wonderful flavor. Smooth, yet not the smoothest whiskey i've tried. I was sure that Jameson could only go up from this bottle, and so far that has been proven true. I was hoping to get a bottle of Jameson Crested, but unfortunately it was not in stock. The choice came down to either Caskmates or Black Barrel, and I decided that the extra $10 was probably worth it and decided on the Black Barrel. Upon pouring my first glass, I was extremely satisfied with the wonderful aroma that came from the whiskey; Strong vanilla hints. I recorked my bottle, and took my first sip. Immediately I could tell the difference between my plain Jameson, and this Black Barrel bottle. Notably smoother than the plain Jameson, with a similar sweetness; yet clearly higher quality liquor. I find myself hesitant in purchasing my next bottle, whether I will try the Jameson Crested, or pick up another bottle of this wonder Black Barrel whiskey. Very enjoyable, and very happy I decided to spend the extra money on this bottle. I have found my favorite whiskey to date.

Robust and flavorful, balanced and smooth. Honey, fruit, coconut and char in nice proportions. Very drinkable, but with plenty of character to keep it interesting. A terrific expression that moves the Jameson's label to a new level.

I would give standard jameson a 4 and this one a five simply because it doesn't burn the tongue until it reaches the back of the throat. drank an entire bottle at the bar; next morning set out to the liquor store to purchase some. the price increase is a bit of a down side but I don't mind, I love the stout notes. I love the malt flavor.

Very good. It kind of makes me think of it as the Kentucky Bourbon of Irish Whiskey. Tried it on a whim and wasn't disappointed in the slightest.

A bit smoother than the ''standard'' Jameson, but not enough of an improvement to warrant the price increase.
