Customer Rating

Previously only released as part of single casks, Nikka decided to add their Coffey Malt to their core range in 2014. Distilled in a Coffey still normally used for grain whisky production, the malt is delightfully fruity and spicy.

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Stuart P

    • Nose:

Fresh and clean, with aromas of candied lemon peel and rich cake spices.

    • Palate:

Robust and spicy, quite a dense mouthfeel and richly textured, with cinnamon and clove on the palate, and citrus-tinged freshness to lighten the load.

    • Finish:

Harmonious blend of dense spices, rich oak, and lemon and orange notes. Delightful.

    • Comment:

A fascinating experiment that more than passes the test. This is a delightfully fruity, spicy whisky with a refreshing aromatic zing.

I normally drink Scottish single malts, but this was surprisingly good. Definitely recommend it.

My first thought was "this is interesting" – it has a unique flavor profile. After a couple sittings with this bottle it quickly made it to my top 3. It almost has butterscotch notes, it's spicy yet smooth and sweet. I'm normally a bourbon drinker but this one is fantastic.

Fantastic, easy-drinking relaxing dram. I loved it. Very nice and I can't wait to get a bottle very soon.

Tried the Malt version as I really liked the Grain version but was a bit disappointed as it is not so good,

Such a great and flavorful whisky. Very punchy and surprising on the nose, sweet and fruity on the palate with a creamy texture (lemon and orange?) and a nice warm and dry aftertaste with no bitterness at all. Far better than the typical Scottish Speyside you've got in the same price range...

This is a crazy, sweet whisky. It's a little pricey but that's what you get with anything Japanese. The nose is sweetness with some acetone, the palate is maple syrup and banana bread with a bit of spice on the back end that helps it from being sickeningly sweet. I could see this being a good dessert dram. Tasty stuff, but nothing that will knock your socks off.

This is great. Not sure about the smokiness, but sweet, smooth, spicy and and complex with ginger and a definite hint of coffee (or is that just the power of suggestion from the name?). Become my favourite Friday night go-to and will buy more when it's gone.

Very nice whisky for my taste - rich in flavours, but still light.

A great introduction to Japanese whisky if you favor single malt scotch.

At first I really hated it, but as the bottle had a chance to open up, it's one of my favs. This is, by far, one of the most unique malt whiskies I've ever tried. I've been drinking whiskies since the early 90s and I have over 50 bottles in my current collection. So you can say that I had my fair share of whiskies. As for the flavor, it's like butter with lots of milk chocolate and a hint of coffee. Some spicy vanilla is in the background (similar to bourbon), but this is short-lived as the velvety body soon coat your mouth. I'll soon be getting a 2nd bottle.

Bought it due to the 2018 bible stating it as being the finest japanese malt whiskey. Colour me confused, it says Nikka Coffey Malt Whiskey, yet the box and bottle both say single grain whiskey... Nose is variable, mostly ok but nor what i expect from a malt whiskey. Tastes good but again unlike anything on my malt whiskey shelf.. Could be my bad, I may have bought incorrectly, that said still not a bad drop.. just not like any malt whiskey i have tasted to date.

This is a cloyingly sweet whisky, both nose and palate. If that is your taste, certainly Glenorangie has better selections. Not my cup of tea. Certainly not worth the price.

Got this as a Christmas present from vouchers and I took a long look into many different brands and flavours as I'm new to whisky, I normally find it hard to identify flavours and what I like or don't like about the taste. This whisky however is the first I know I enjoy and know why, every flavour and smell is easily identifiable. A perfect first whisky as there is no burn or horrible after taste that I find i get with most shop bought whiskies. This is a strong yet very enjoyable whisky.
