Sustainability at Slane

Slane Castle distillery is striving towards both carbon neutral and zero-waste production. While that may be some way off, there are plenty of other initiatives in place at present to reduce the distillery’s impact on the environment.

These include:

Collecting rainwater for irrigation, to reduce the amount drawn from the River Boyne

Providing spent grain to local farmers for use as animal feed

Building an anaerobic digester to create biogas from waste, which will be used to heat the stills

Promoting Biodiversity

Slane Castle are planting thousands of oak trees to boost biodiversity in their local area — and to potentially facilitate the production of their own Irish oak casks one day, too. They have also installed nesting boxes for barn owls and bats within the distillery buildings, and have constructed a salmon ladder within the section of the Harlinstown Stream restored by Slane Castle. The salmon ladder allows the fish to travel safely upstream during the mating season — ensuring that more salmon can lay their eggs safely and combat the declining population.

    Graham,

Exceptionally smooth easy drinker but lacks on big notes or complexity. On the whole a nice place for those who are beginning their own whisky/whiskey journeys. Cheers??
