Port Charlotte's long-awaited 10 year old, rich and smoky whisky made by the independently minded folks at Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. PC, as it's known to its friends, is heavily peated to 40ppm, putting it up with Islay's other heavy hitters. The resulting whisky is big and peaty with a maritime tang – the Bruichladdich team would claim that it's because their warehouses are so close to the sea, we're still undecided. In the end, the most important thing is the taste: it's rather good.

    JD,

Good quality whisky. The tasting notes are spot on. At full strength the flavours are masked a little for me, with predominantly the Alcohol and peat dominating. With a little water (not to much) it opens up on the nose, where you get sea salt, seaweed and all the smells of the beach. The taste intensifies without the initial alcoholic punch you get neat and the finish is where the peat lingers longest along with salt and some sweet fruit. The iodine is subtle and you need to search a little for it. It’s a big whisky for the price.

    Paul Hayward,

When I buy whisky, I almost never buy anything but Islay as I love strong, bold, smoky flavours. I picked up the Port Charlotte gift set while on offer as I hadn’t tried it previously. I can safely say that I will now ALWAYS have a bottle of this in the cabinet. It’s sweet, salty, very smoky and has a subtle burn with a nice up front punch. Possibly in my top 3 Islay malts personally.

    Anonymous,

Excellent whisky. Very strong yet quite balanced smoky / sweet.

    Carlo,

Not as I expected... Starting my Islay journey from Lagavulin 16, I expect this dram will be much volatile... instead I find this whisky quite subtle, no sharp edge, no punchy alcohol, great... but not as I expected, hahaha... Fruity on the nose Salty up front, sweet on the middle, and smoked on the back... The smoke character is not meaty or salted fish like Lagavulin 16. Do you guys have recommendations what whisky goes the same smokey direction as Lag 16?
