Port Charlotte's long-awaited 10 year old, rich and smoky whisky made by the independently minded folks at Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. PC, as it's known to its friends, is heavily peated to 40ppm, putting it up with Islay's other heavy hitters. The resulting whisky is big and peaty with a maritime tang – the Bruichladdich team would claim that it's because their warehouses are so close to the sea, we're still undecided. In the end, the most important thing is the taste: it's rather good.

Nose
Toffee and vanilla fudge jump out before we dive into a bucket of singed raisins and smouldering peat bricks. Green grass and leafy notes poke out around the edges along with candied lemons and flamed orange peel.
-
Palate
A sweet creamy hit up front leads into lemon boiled sweets. black-pepper spice and a thick layer of peaty smoke. The green edges from the nose are back, with richer notes of stewed apples and sultanas, and a touch of vanilla toffee.
-
Finish
Menthol throat sweets and sweet smoke slowly fade to leave grilled apples and buttery pastry.

Excellente. The most complex entry level Islay I've had. Extrememely well balanced for those who appreciate a lot of peat smoke in their whisky. There's a hell of a lot of good stuff going on here, and peat is only the half of it, at most. 4.5/5.0

Odd. Definitely get a blast of TCP and Wrights Coal Tar Soap. Very strange. Lots of smoke at the finish, which is really nice. Not sure about this one yet....it will have to grow on me..

Quite good, a solid mix of peat and richness. There's a bit of fruitiness that isn't mentioned in the flavor profile above. I'm not the biggest fan of Islay malts but this definitely holds it's own as among my favorites from the island.

Good quality whisky. The tasting notes are spot on. At full strength the flavours are masked a little for me, with predominantly the Alcohol and peat dominating. With a little water (not to much) it opens up on the nose, where you get sea salt, seaweed and all the smells of the beach. The taste intensifies without the initial alcoholic punch you get neat and the finish is where the peat lingers longest along with salt and some sweet fruit. The iodine is subtle and you need to search a little for it. It’s a big whisky for the price.

When I buy whisky, I almost never buy anything but Islay as I love strong, bold, smoky flavours. I picked up the Port Charlotte gift set while on offer as I hadn’t tried it previously. I can safely say that I will now ALWAYS have a bottle of this in the cabinet. It’s sweet, salty, very smoky and has a subtle burn with a nice up front punch. Possibly in my top 3 Islay malts personally.
