Glenlivet 1981 / 36 Year Old / Sherry Finish / Signatory for The Whisky Exchange
Product Description

Exclusive to The Whisky Exchange, this hand-picked, single cask 36 year-old is a colossus of long-aged Glenlivet complexity, having spent its final 6 years in a sherry butt. The nose is an alluring, aromatic maze of cocoa, dried fruit, pastry and subtle oak. It’s just as enchanting on the tongue, where fresh apple and cinder toffee battle spice for dominance of a tempered citrus and oak landscape. All is reconciled in a finish full of gentle liquorice and mild cinnamon, with more rich, dark fruit to walk us out.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting notes by Caroline Roddis (The Whisky Exchange)

    • Nose

Heavenly. Toasted plum, apricots, brandy-soaked prunes, chocolate-covered raisins, a green quality that’s somewhere between leaf and toasted grass, powdered almonds, ripe grapes, old motorcar seats and orange drizzle cake.

    • Palate

Deliciously rich. Sherry, luscious but not vibrant fruit that wraps itself around your tongue, subtle and well-integrated spice, honey, old leather, cherry marzipan, plums, apricot pastry, orange cake, milk chocolate and a touch of coconut.

    • Finish

Milk chocolate, honey, hazelnut, coconut, cherry and a small twist of spice. It just keeps on going.

  • Tasting Notes by Billy Abbott (The Whisky Exchange)

    • Nose

Mint chocolate with sultanas and raisins. Spiced brioche and cinnamon buns follow, with apple Danish pastries pushing through the middle. Old and elegant oak sits at the back: well-worn wax-polished tables. Hints of tropical fruit join the apples as it sits: pineapple and papaya.

    • Palate

Toffee apples kick things off: sharp Granny Smiths covered with crunchy barley-sugar-tinged toffee – followed by a burst of woody spice: cinnamon, cedar, nutmeg and freshly-sawn oak boards. Sweetness builds, with dried apple and pineapple complemented by a touch of simple syrup. That fades, revealing a core of wax-polished oak.

    • Finish

Soft spice and squishy liquorice. Singed raisins emerge with candied peel. Fruit cake notes linger.

    • Comment

Fruit scattered across an old oak table – just what you're looking for from something like this. The sherry cask has worked its magic, adding rich fruit and spice without swamping 30 years of maturation.

I haven't tried it yet. It's a birthday present for our son who turns 40 this year. He's a Scotch drinker and I wanted to get him something that was distilled the year he was born. We are really looking forward to giving it to him. I really appreciate the experience of dealing with The Whiskey Exchange. The process was great and the bottle looks fantastic. Thank you again!
