The taste is sweet woody spice with hints of fruit. You then get a mild to medium warmth from the alcohol as you swallow. When drank neat the flavors are intense and its quite smooth and easy to drink especially if you have a sweet tooth. Though I found with ice the flavor is diluted and the taste of the alcohol is more prominent. So drinking it neat for me is the way to go. The only downside is you have to show restraint as you could easily drink half the bottle in a evening.lol

This is one of the finest rums I have ever tasted. Growing up in Florida and having Caribbean family I grew up drinking rum, but as I got older I wanted more than Appleton or Mount Gay. Tonight with some friends I had a tasting: El Dorado 12 and Ron Zacapa Centenario XO Rum Solera Gran Reserva Especial. Despite the El Dorado being 1/3 the price of the Ron Zacapa, all who tasted both said the El Dorado had a nicer fragrance, a better mouth-feel and a superior aftertaste, one that is complex with flavors of vanilla, wood and tobacco amongst other flavours. It is a truly delicious rum and at around ?30 a bottle it is an absoluteam steal!!! Put it into a brandy snifter for best effect, and for goodness sake do not use it as a mixer!!

This I a fantastic sipping rum, but it also mixes very well too. It smooth and this is a strange word to use comfortable, it''s a sit and take your time drink and it''s so full of flavour, very very nice.

Total rum novice other than the standard bar rums you have with coke, I went to a rum club with a friend and the bar tender gave me a double of this straight and I was hooked! A great sweet sipper of a rum, a great change to my usual tipple of Whiskey, I still love Whiskey but I also love aged rum now too!

This is the latest rum I tried as I saw it on offer. It is certainly a rich desserty rum with hints of sticky fruit cake about it. Enjoyed with cola (have come to enjoy using pepsi max over the red stuff due to simply tasting better with rum) and straight. When drinking straight this was much nicer at room temperature with no ice compared to when it was chilled. Though as a drink, it is more of a sticky sweet flavour attack than ''smooth'' as some others suggest. I get the impression it would do well in some mulled drinks (cinnamon and apple maybe?) too. This certainly has oodles of character to stand alone and will likely buy again.

I bought this for my husband a couple of years ago and he is totally hooked on it. Best rum ever - even better than the 15 year old. So I would highly recommend it.

Without a doubt one of the best rums that £30.00 will get you, it's a must to add to your collection. For me it's better than the more expensive 15 year. Smooth, tasty and very enjoyable. It's a sipper all the way, total waste to mix it.

boy !! this is special the smoothest spirit I have ever tasted.to me this is like warm spicy maple toffee in a spirit sent by the gods I must admit ive always been a single malt kind of person and only recently over the last few years have I started to sample the better rums out there than you get in your local supermarkets im already ordering a second bottle of this wonderful creation

Its sweet and rich yet the finish is prominently of anise and fennel. Further aging 15-21 ive found the flavour intensifies but the 12 and 21 are really the best.

By far the best 'bang for buck' of the El Dorados. Better on the palate, imo, than the 15 year old. Beautifully smooth, full of fantastic flavours and by far my favourite rum of the many, many I've tried. Best drank neat with no ice.

This is a decent rum but has a bit of a biteto it, when I was epxecting it to be as smooth as the 15 year old. The 15 year old is truly sublime and is worth paying the extra 13 pounds. I tried to "save" and it wasn't worth it.

  • 10 February 2013

I have tried the Appleton 15, 18 and 21 year old but I still prefer the 12 year old El Dorado. It is the smoothest spirit I have ever tasted.

This isn't rum, this is candy.

  • 23 April 2012

You cannot go wrong with any of the El Dorado rums and this one is no exception. Can I have a free bottle of 21yr old now please?

Smooooooooooooooooooooooth!Great with lime and ginger beer

I've been drinking rum since a wee nipper when my cheeky uncle gave me a sneaky snifter in George town Guyana. This is a fantastic rum. Not as sweet as some Guyanese rums thus allowing for a more complex taste. Rich molasses quickly holds hands with orange, citrus and oak finishing with coffee, toffee and vanilla. Blended to a smashing taste! This rum keeps going even when it's gone ?!
