A cask strength Island single malt from Highland Park that is matured predominantly in sherry-seasoned American oak casks hand-selected by master whisky-maker Gordon Motion. The nose is sweet and smoky, with aromas of violets, vanilla pods and aromatic peat smoke. The palate offers notes of soft toffee, heather honey, freshly-grated nutmeg, floral peat and orange zest that linger in the finish.

I bought two of these from TWE on the day of release. One to open and one to keep. Full disclosure - I'm a massive HP fan going back about 20 years when I first got into whisky. I've visited the distillery in Orkney and HP is one of my favourites. The bottle I opened went into a decanter a week before Christmas and I had aimed to drink it across Christmas and New Year. But I fell foul of flu just after Christmas and was in bed for two weeks living off water and the occasional piece of toast. I came out the other side a few days ago and had my first taste of this HP Cask Strength bottling from the decanter last night. The whisky had been in the decanter for just over 3 weeks, exposed to the air. It is an outstanding expression from the HP team, with everything I love about the 12YO but ramped up to 11. I drank it undiluted for the full experience and it did not disappoint. It's a real slow sipper, with long legs in terms of the taste staying in my mouth, so I probably took about 1 hour to drink my 30ml measure. I fully expect the flavour profile to change a bit as the whisky reacts with the air in the decanter over the coming weeks, but I am very glad I bought two bottles now. If you can find one somewhere, buy it if you like HP or cask strength whisky.

Leave this to sit in the glass for 5 minutes or so before sipping. On the nose, I get berries, vanilla and sherried spices. On the palate treacly toffee, cream and coconut whilst the finish is spicy, long and very warm at the back of the mouth. Water brings out the notes even more by dialling back on the alcohol. The palate becomes much spicier with some biscuit added! A wonderful dram from a great distillery

Like many, I feel that HP whiskies have deteriorated over the past few years - the 12yo used to be one of my favourite drams but now I would give it house room. I decided to give this Batch 1 cask strength a try to see if it could change my mind about where the distillery was going - but it merely confirmed my view. I have many cask strength whiskies in my collection - from Ardbeg to Talisker, Laphroaig to Strathmill and many others including all the Campbeltown whiskies - but this Highland Park is the worst. It's raw and rough and thin and I'm left wondering what to do with it. Expensive screen-wash for my car, perhaps? if you read this, remember that all reviews are subjective and purely a matter of one man's opinion. You may well love it. Perhaps HP should focus less on the presentation and more on the content.

Over the years I have tried most of the Highland Park range. The only one In my opinion that beats this is the 25. This whisky is complex and stunning. Honey, spice and smoke.....gorgeous. buy one
