The Legend of

Montgomery Collins

In the 1950s, a wing commander of the British Air Force, officer Montgomery Collins, was stationed in Germany after World War II. Collins developed a deep affection for the Black Forest and decided to settle there, opening a guesthouse called ‘Zum wilden Affen’ (The Wild Monkey). Alongside running the guesthouse, Collins made his own a gin from a mix of local botanicals and ingredients he encountered during his travels through Asia. This gin was adored by patrons of the Wild Monkey for decades before falling into obscurity.

The

Discovery and Revival

Years later, Alexander Stein stumbled upon this captivating story and a nearly forgotten recipe for Collins' gin. Stein was born into a family of distillers and became fascinated by the recipes blend of British tradition, Indian spices, and Black Forest botanicals. He set out to recreate this exceptional spirit and partnered with distiller Christoph Keller, devising a carefully guarded secret recipe of 47 botanicals, hence the name Monkey 47.

Schwarzwald Sour

The number of botanicals in Monkey 47 gives the gin many dimensions, lending itself to a wide variety of cocktails. We’ve decided to accentuate its citrus and floral aspects with a classic sour recipe. It showcases the lime and lemon in the spirit, which are dotted with lovely floral hints of the gin's lavender and chamomile botanicals.

  • 60ml Monkey 47
  • 20ml Lime Juice
  • 10ml ml Simple Syrup

Pour the ingredients into a shaker with ice, shake vigorously and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a slice of lime.
