Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes from Whiskyfun (Serge Valentin)

    • Colour:

      Deep amber with bronze hues.

    • Nose:

Starts immediately dry, mostly on coffee and bitter cocoa, which is certainly unusual for Balvenie, but rather beautiful. Gets even more coffeeish (all kinds of coffee, from espresso to café latte) and rather perfectly spicy (cinnamon, nutmeg, hints of star anise), and then more ‘antique’, with old leather, wax polish, old furniture... Discreet whiffs of soy sauce, but not meatiness here. I really like this one, very cleanly dry.

    • Mouth:

A slight weakness at the attack due to the low strength but it’s soon to take off, on these coffeeish and chocolaty notes again, prunes, Corinth raisins, the same spices as on the nose and a slight, pleasant tannicity (not bone-dry). Maybe the middle is a bit weakish again but the finish is longer again, rather full, clean, still very dry, with pleasant tannins and an aftertaste on cooked blackcurrants and prunes. A success I think. 88 points.

    • Comment:

This brand new Balvenie was fully matured in Oloroso sherry casks.

This is a wonderful whisky that I had the pleasure of sampling during a tour of the Balvenie distillery in 2013. I opted to fill my own bottle with this sweet, flavorful offering and I only bring it out for very special occasions.

Stunning. Lovely dark colour, rich, sweet flavour with a silky feel and a lovely oak after taste. Worth the money.

This is an absolute gem of a whiskey which is very enjoyable. I would have no hesitation in recommending this Balvenie to anyone.

I have expensive taste, it seems. But, this is worth the $100 it will take to buy it. It is sweet, and yet masculine and flavorable. Smooth, easy to drink, and rewarding. I haven't had anything better, though I usually enjoy a St George for about half the price.

What a splendid Balvenie this is. It tastes quite out of range compared to the other bottlings. The spice is remarkably present for this dram, but with the typical Balvenie sweetness in the background. After adding a few drops of water the spice moves to the background to be just a bit spicy Balvenie. For me, one of the best Balvenies bottled in the last few years.

I just received this as a gift, it is amazing. I was somewhat surprised to learn how expensive the bottle is for the flavor, I can't describe it in quite the same flowery terms but I did note a rather fruity mild taste after the initial whisky brine, peat, and leather that strikes first. Worth having, especially when free.

Excellent and warm. Soft. Wonderful caramel color, taste and feel. In my opinion the flavor that pops out the most is cooked fig more than raisin. Very nice. I think it is now my new favorite!
