Balvenie Signature 12yo replaced the fondly-remembered Founders Reserve 10yo as the staple in the distillery's range. This is a marriage of Sherry, Bourbon and Refill casks and, as always with Balvenie, it's a polished, mellow whisky to relax with.

Balvenie 12 Year Old Signature Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes from (Gavin D. Smith)

Rich and malty on the nose, with characteristically insinuating notes of spice, dried fruits, vanilla and honey. Becoming increasingly floral, with soft toffee and a hint of sweet Sherry as it warms in the glass.

Full-bodied on the palate, yet with classic Balvenie smoothness and grace. Vanilla, honey, Sherried cinnamon, nutmeg and a whiff of smoke merge beautifully. The finish is long with spicy oak. A great whisky. David Stewart has performed his magic once again!

  • Tasting Notes by Dr Whisky

Not unlike the 10yo Founder's Reserve (discontinued come 2009) in its restrained richness with orange oil, honey, a touch of smoke, and a slight sherry influence of dried fruits.

Mellow and fruity. Some kind of spiciness, too. Toasty, vanilla-ed and laundry fresh, with a medium short finish of oak and outdoorsy spice.

Compact and complex, although pinpointing particular flavours is a challenge as they are all bound up in each other. The kind of well-constructed whisky that reveals a new aroma, taste or impression every sip. The 18% sherry casks used in this whisky make their mark, but gently, like the Founder's Reserve. Available in small releases, who knows how each batch will vary?

  • Producer's Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich and complex with honey, citrus fruits and vanilla oak notes.

Taste: Rich and honeyed with a hint of sherry fruitiness.  A spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg and a subtle oakiness develop with time.  The finish is warm and lingering.

I posted recently about Batch 4 released in the US and really liked that bottling. My friends and I finished that one quickly. I returned to my favorite store for more of it and they just got in Batch 5 and all the Batch 4's were gone. I think Batch 5 was actually better than the 4. It wasn't as harsh as the 4 but had a nice spicey kick to it that was great and balanced with a nice sherry influence. Great scotch for the price. My wife 's son just loved it.

Love the DW Signature. For a long time it was my favourite - and is still right up there. A big step up from the regular DW in terms of both smoothness and complexity. Very subtle and almost 'thin' - extremely drinkable. Affordable too.

I just tried Batch 4 released at 43% alcohol in the US. This is an excellent dram and a lot like Batches 1 and 2 with a nice light sherry influence but with some body to it. For the price point you can't beat this one and is better than the current Doublewood. The early Doublewood's were just superb but they have fallen off quite a lot in the last few years. This Signature and the 15 year old Single Barrel are my favorites in The Balvenie for affordable quality scotch tasting.

Woah ! Along the lines of a Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old, wholly flavoursome, a little harsh maybe, but that's what i liked about it. Was a toss-up between this and Monkey Shoulder at the time, and i got this. No regrets.

Batch #4. There is a sherry influence on the nose but it is fairly light. Some honey there too and plenty of malty biscuits. To taste, this is mellowness personified with plesent malty flavours and subtle dried fruit. The finish is modest and lightly spiced. One to drink on an evening when you aren't looking for big peat or sherry influences.

A step up from the Double Wood, not an awful lot to say about it, it's a very good price for a very enjoyable whiskey. One i'll always re-buy when I run out.

Delicious an smooth. Absolute delight and one of the better single malts I have had the pleasure of drinking

  • Rumen 10 November 2011

Nectar of the highest quality. Very few better than this, be they sherried or not. Single Malt Ambrosia!

  • Anonymous 13 April 2011

Must say this is not nearly as good a dram as the 10y/o founders that it replaced. To me it is to similar in style to the double wood.I used to buy a lot of the founders reserve, but alas i have only bought 1 bottle of signiture, and have moved my tastes to pastures new.Bring back the founders reserve -and it was considerably less expensive than its replacement.RMcDonald
