Rum

Up until 1970, the British Navy, now known as the Royal Navy, issued a daily ration of rum to sailors. The ration was known by sailors as a ‘tot’, a word still sometimes used today to refer to a measure of spirit. The Navy first began serving sailors rum as the drink of choice when they became involved in the settling of trading disputes in the Caribbean several hundred years ago.
