Lagavulin Logo

When Lagavulin’s founders laid their foundations on the Kildalton coast, Islay was already a thriving centre of Scots distilling, famed for the quality of its whisky. Even though it stood among some of the most respected distilleries in the world, Lagavulin was destined to distinguish itself from the rest. Today, it remains the gold standard for many fans of peated whisky, a reputation built largely on the strength the flagship Lagavulin 16 Year Old.

A classic for a reason, this richly peated Lagavulin offers notes of burnt orange, smoked tea and smouldering tobacco leaves. Well-judged use of sherry casks imparts some sticky fruits and savoury umami that harmonise with maritime notes of pebbles and brine.

Kirsten Robertson

The people behind the whisky

When Kirsten was named senior operator at Lagavulin she was the first woman in the history of the distillery to hold the title. “I’m originally from Edinburgh but have been coming to Islay since I was a wee girl,” she tells us. “Over the years I’ve fallen in love with the island, community and of course the whisky.” It’s thanks to Kirsten and her team that Lagavulin 16 retains the same high quality that made it famous.

"What I love about my job is running the entire process from grain to glass. We focus a lot on sustainability and making the most of every part of the process to make the dram everyone loves with as little impact to the environment but keeping the high quality."
